What happened?
Officers responded to an altercation at Rude Rudy’s last Thursday and found Georgia Southern University student Michael Gatto, 18, unresponsive with head injuries. Gatto was taken to East Georgia Regional Medical Center for treatment and later airlifted to Memorial Health University Medical Center in Savannah, where he later died.
The suspect, Grant Spencer, was arrested last Thursday, Aug. 28, and charged with aggravated battery.
What’s the latest?
The Statesboro Police Department announced Tuesday that Grant Spencer has been charged with felony murder in addition to the aggravated battery charges brought against him previously.
What is aggravated battery?
Aggravated battery is when a person “maliciously causes bodily harm to another” by disfiguring or rendering useless a part of their body, according to the code of Georgia.
And felony murder?
Felony murder is when someone causes the death of another person while committing a felony.
What sentences do those charges carry?
A person convicted of aggravated battery in Georgia faces between one and 20 years in prison. Georgia statute also states that the penalty for felony murder is life imprisonment or death.
