Eagles conquer Savannah State in home opener 83-9
September 5, 2014
After the heartbreaking loss last week, the Georgia Southern football team showed off their spread option offense against Savannah State in the home opener today and took home their first win, 83-3.
The first quarter opened with a quick three and out from the Tiger offense that appeared to be on skis against the Georgia Southern defensive line. Sophomore quarterback Kevin Ellison quickly hit senior receiver Zach Walker on a long pass that set up a 14 yard run from sophomore running back Matthew Brieda.
Once the Eagles got the ball back, Ellison hooked up on a 38 yard touchdown pass to senior receiver Kentrellis Showers. With time running out in the quarter, sophomore quarterback Favian Upshaw ran for a score of his own to make the game 21-0.
The second quarter featured more of the same for the Eagles. A couple big plays allowed for Brieda to plunge into the endzone from one yard out. Later, sophomore receiver Montay Crockett took an end around eight yards in for a touchdown. The final score of the half came from senior running back Devin Scott from one yard away.
The second half opened with senior quarterback Ezayi Youyoute taking snaps for the Eagles. The first drive of the half resulted in a one yard touchdown run from senior running back Ean Days. That wasn’t the last of the endzone visits for Days as he ripped off an 80 yard touchdown run on the next drive.
A Tiger fumble gave the Eagles the ball near midfield as they drove down the field and set up a big run from senior running back Brandon Thomas.
Youyoute opened the fourth quarter in style with a 37 yard touchdown on third and one. The Tigers were able to get on the board with a field goal making the score 76-3. Senior running back Dennis Pritchard was the fifth back to make it into the endzone in the final Eagle score of the contest.
On the last drive for the Tigers they managed to throw up a prayer and it was answered for their first touchdown of the night. The extra point was blocked by the Eagles. The onside kick was recovered by Savannah State but they couldn’t get the ball back into the endzone, ending the game 83-9.
