Professor Richard Arum, co-author of Academically Adrift: Limited Learning on College Campuses, will be giving a lecture on Wednesday, Oct. 3 as part of the Norman Fries Distinguished Lecture series.

The series began in 2001 and has been given every year at Georgia Southern University. This year’s lecture is sponsored by the College of Education.

Arum is a professor in the Department of Sociology and director of the Institute of Human Development and Social Change at New York University. He is also director of the Education Research Program of the Social Science Research Council, according to a news release.

Arum’s book has received much publicity, including coverage from the New York Times, the Chronicle of Higher Education, Inside Higher Education, and National Public Radio.

After reading the book given to him by Chancellor Hank Huckaby, University President Brooks Keel invited him to attend this year’s lecture. Keel recognized the value that Huckaby attaches to the ideas shared in the book, according to the release.

Joining Huckaby will be USG Chief Academic Officer and Executive Vice Chancellor Dr. Houston Davis and USG Executive Vice Chancellor for Administration.

The lecture will be given at 7:30 p.m. in the Nessmith-Lane Conference Assembly Hall and is open to the public.
