Shelby Whitaker, senior studio art major, is shown working on one piece of her coil vessel series for her Advance Ceramics class. She has been working on this sculpture for over two weeks and each individual coil in the sculpture weighs four pounds. The title of this sculpture is “Core.” We asked Shelby what her inspiration was for her art and this was her response:
“Before college I was very active in my art department in high school. My teacher Mr. Gore taught me more than I could have asked for. He has always inspired my work and continues to inspire me today. My work invokes a sense of strength and patience. I love ceramics more than any medium. Using my hands to create massive vessels is a very calming experience. Working with clay and getting dirty everyday makes me feel like I’m one with the earth.”
