The Georgia Southern softball team fell to the University of Georgia 5-1 in a non-conference game Wednesday night.

Coming into this game, the Bulldogs were ranked #12 nationally and on a five game losing streak. Behind a strong pitching performance from junior Mary Wilson Avant, who pitched for six innings, GS struggled on bat. She only allowed four hits and struck out six batters.

The lone GS point was due to a strong hit from sophomore catcher Allyssah Mullis, which allowed junior outfielder Shelby Wilson to run in from second base.

Three Bulldogs hit home runs, including juniors Ciara Bryan, Justice Milz and freshman Lacey Fincher. GS allowed seven hits throughout the game.

Junior outfielder Mekhia Freeman continued her streak of offensive consistency with two hits tonight, which increased her hitting average to .390 and brought her to 32 hits this season.

Sophomore pitcher Rylee Waldrep gave up four hits, four runs and walked three batters in two innings. She was relieved by senior Kaylee Ramos in the third inning, who gave up five hits and a run for the remainder of the game.

GS goes down in the books with a 16-15 overall record and remains with a 3-6 conference record. The team heads into a home weekend conference series with #9 ranked Louisiana starting on Friday night at 6 p.m.
