Book Group: Teach Students How to Learn (Saundra McGuire)

Time: 11 a.m. -12:15 p.m.

Do you believe that students can learn more deeply and achieve more success than they do at present? Are you frustrated by unmotivated, disengaged students? Join this book discussion to discover strategies that will positively influence student learning in your classes. The author, Saundra McGuire, provides practical, research-based strategies to teach students how to learn. Mindset, Motivation, and Metacognition are key to deeper learning. Registration is limited to 10 participants, and by registering you commit to attending all group meetings. Each participant will receive a copy of the book at the first meeting.

The Biodynamics and Human Performance Center on Armstrong Campus is excited to welcome Richard Fineman, a Ph.D. candidate specializing in biomechanics and wearable technologies at MIT, as a guest lecturer. Using Swivl: Preparing for edTPA

Lights. Camera. Action! Join College of Education Instructional Resources Center (IRC) Director Hollie Sisk as she reviews the basic workflow to prepare for edTPA recording, documenting actual footage, and best practices for backing up your video before uploading to Chalk and Wire. [not proper parallel structure; elsewise linking unrelated things; awkward series] Sisk will showcase the Swivl app and highlight a few of the devices available to assist you in the edTPA process. Join us on Thursday, September 6 at 4:30 pm in University Hall room 157 (on the Armstrong Campus). No RSVP required!

Art Walk

Time: 5:30 p.m.-8:00 p.m.

Place: 5120 Jasmine Ave/ German Country Club

Armstrong alum and local realtor Jennifer Crumpton is hosting an Art Walk in Savannah’s newest waterfront gated community, Bluffside at Country Club Creek. The art walk and open house will feature works from local artists Ashley Havy, Brook Havy, Eric Clark, Kathleen Jones, Raquel Dyson. Free food and drinks will be available

Friday, September 7

Bacon Fest

Time: 4 p.m.-11 p.m.

Place: Rousakis Plaza Riverfront Plaza

Head on down to River Street this weekend for a great time with a lot of tasty food! Multiple vendors such as Wet Willie’s, The Bayou Café, Chocolat by Adam Turoni, and Gnam Gnam Gelato will be there selling many bacon-related food and dessert items. Some of the food items that will be served include bacon-on-a-stick, bacon-wrapped shrimp, and chocolate-covered bacon. A variety of bands will be performing throughout the weekend, such as Liquid Ginger, The Young Americans, and Ember City.

First Friday Art March

Time: 6 p.m. – 9 p.m.

Place: Bull Street

Every first Friday of the month, Art Rise Savannah presents the First Friday Art March through the Victorian and Starland Districts of Savannah. Discover local art, music, food and culture all over Georgia’s First City by taking the free Art March Trolley to different galleries and shops around Forsyth Park and Past Forsyth Park. There is FREE entry to all of the First Friday Art March events!

GlowRage Party at the Stage on Bay

Time: 9 p.m.- 2 a.m.

Early tickets are $15.

Package tickets are $45

As part of the “Let’s Get Wild” tour, GlowRage is bringing their glow party to the Stage on Bay this weekend. It will be a cool blacklight party with glow-in-the-dark paint and upbeat music. Anyone 18 or older can get in with an ID. The paint will be provided for and there will be a bar at the venue. If your birthday is the day before, the day of, or the day after, you can get in for free! Full prices are listed on the event Facebook page.

Saturday, September 8

Forsyth Farmers Market

Time: 9 a.m.-1 p.m.

Place: Forsyth Park

The Forsyth Farmers’ Market vendors offer a variety of local goods including seasonal produce, eggs, honey, pastured meat, bread, cheese, mushrooms, fresh herbs, vegetable sauces, preserves, coffee beans, heirloom seeds and potted plants. From the very beginning, the FFM has focused on food and food issues which is why it is a producer-only market (meaning all vendors have to be producing at least 75 percent of the products they sell)  and allows only food and plant vendors.

Meet and Greet with Mark “OZ” Geist

Time: 5:30 p.m.- 9:30 p.m.

Place: Coastal Cathedral 275 Berwick Blvd.

General admission is $20

This will be a meet and greet with one of the soldiers who was caught in the middle of the Benghazi attacks on Sept. 11-12 in 2012. He will be telling the story of his life, what made him want to join the military, and how his faith got him through those attacks. The proceeds of the event will go towards the church’s Village Transformation Project, which provides food, supplies, and shelter to those who need it in the surrounding area.

Women’s Club Soccer Games

Place: Soccer Field

Armstrong’s women’s club soccer team will host a match against University of South Carolina. The match will be held on the Armstrong campus. The women’s club team will be hosting multiple home games this semester including games against  Clemson, Coastal Georgia, Furman, College of Charleston, and Georgia Southern-Statesboro Campus.

Analytic Rubrics (Assessment Instruments) ARMSTRONG

Time: 2:30 p.m.-3:30 p.m.

Place: Solms Hall 211

Do you ask your students to produce evidence of their learning in the form of written assignments, projects, designs or performances? If so, rubrics provide a tool to consistently and effectively evaluate critical components of the work produced. In this workshop, you will learn how to evaluate constructed rubrics and create meaningful rubrics to measure student learning outcomes and student products. You will understand why this process is necessary and will begin developing a rubric to evaluate students’ work. In addition, you will discuss how these rubrics are useful for much more than assigning grades. Please bring course learning outcomes, your program outcomes and an assignment for which you would like to develop a rubric to evaluate.
