On Sept 26, Armstrong Campus held the Major and Career Exploration Fair. This event was held in the Student Union Ballroom from 11 am – 3 pm.
The Major and Career Exploration Fair featured professors and students in booths with representatives from different departments at the Armstrong campus discussing the aspects of different majors and career opportunities tied to specific majors.
Some of the booths represented majors and departments that have had a longstanding history on the Armstrong campus, but there were also newer booths that featured newer departments like the Department of Communication Arts. This Department has developed a Communications Studies major that can be earned at the Armstrong Campus.
Regarding the new program, Dr. Elizabeth F. Desnoyers-Colas, Associate Professor of Communication and Africana studies, says, “This is a new program that is about teaching people how to hone their communication skills that they have. For instance, in the class that I will be teaching called Gender and Communication, we will talk about what are the issues, how women communicate, how men communicate, and how we all communicate with each other.”
Another new department that was featured in the fair was the Department of Writing & Linguistics which now has the Writing and Linguistics major offered on the Armstrong Campus. This major is a result of the merge between Georgia Southern University and the former Armstrong State University. This department is one of the few across the nation where students will be able to acquire a Bachelor of Arts degree in writing and linguistics.
During the event, students were given pamphlets and goodies. These were passed out in conjunction with details about the benefits of each major.
“It can help people figure out what major they want to change to and if they are undecided,” says Ves Sprole, a freshman Computer Science major.
Picking a major is a not an easy task. These fairs are held to help students in their decision-making. Don’t be afraid to pick a major that you love no matter what others love. Remember what Confucius said, “Choose a job you love, and you will never have to work a day in your life.”
