Savannah is preparing for the arrival of former U.S President and Republican Presidential nominee, Donald Trump. According to Savannah Now, he is expected to hold a rally in downtown Savannah, closing off streets around the Johnny Mercer Theatre Civic Center on Tuesday.
His Savannah stop comes weeks after the arrival of Vice President and Democratic Presidential nominee, Kamala Harris, in coastal Georgia. His visit also takes place after following his rally in Atlanta on Aug. 3.
With Georgia as a crucial swing state in the upcoming presidential election, and Savannah’s growth as an economic hub, both candidates are eyeing the 16 electoral votes in the Peach State.
Trump had previously lost Georgia’s electoral votes in November 2020, later publicly criticizing Governor Brian Kemp and Secretary of State Brad Raffensburger for their handling of the state’s elections. Although Chatham County largely voted Democratic in the 2016 and 2020 presidential elections, Trump and local republican party members expect a warm reception for the GOP nominee, according to the Atlanta Journal Constitution.
Trump’s campaign event will be held at the Civic Center on Sept. 24. Doors will open at 10 a.m. and Trump takes the stage at 1 p.m.
