Feed the Boro held its monthly food drop Saturday at Statesboro High School. Feed the Boro is a local organization that helps get food to those in need. They hold food drives once a month and are always looking for volunteers.
At the event, there were two lines of pallets. There were fruits, vegetables, meats and more. Teams of volunteers worked together to fill each of their bags to give to the families. It was an amazing opportunity to meet new people and get involved. Snacks and water were provided for the volunteers.
Volunteers from around Statesboro came to help their community. Plenty of Georgia Southern students devoted their Saturday morning to the event. Serenity Mata, a freshman, came out to show support. “I like helping people and I like volunteering,” she explained, noting that her favorite part of the event was “seeing everybody’s happy faces while they were getting food.”
Another student volunteer, Kaitlyn Lettau, said, “I love volunteering at places and helping others. It feels rewarding.” Her favorite part was “helping others, packing the food for the people, and seeing them happy.”
Volunteer Molly Hooker described the turnout throughout the event. “The turnout was amazing,” she said, “To me, it felt like we had 1,000 people.”
“Just being able to, you know, have that like five-second interaction with people just to see how thankful they are for simple things like fruits and vegetables,” Hooker continued.
Gregory Stone, a Georgia Southern student, said, “The fact that I got to help my local community. Even though I just moved here, it’s great to get a foot in the door.”
