The Armstrong Recreation Center offers various activities for students that promote sportsmanship, fun and relaxation — whether cheering from the sidelines or playing on the field, there’s a place for you in intramural and club sports.
Spirits High for Club Soccer at Armstrong
During club soccer practice this week, co-captains Diego Ticas and Gavin Watkis highlighted how the team serves as a stress reliever and brotherhood after a long day at school and on the job.
“I come out here and it just like makes my day, it’s a good decompress,” Ticas said. “I meet new people, you know, laugh it up with a bunch of my friends. It’s a vibe.”
Both Watkis and Ticas are full-time students and workers, but in their busy schedules, they make time to coordinate game strategies and starting lineups with their team members.
“We make sure we play as a team, as a family, and, you know, sometimes families fight, but…. we just regroup from that,” Watkis said. “Once I’m out here, I’m more like — you know— calm.”
The student-led team practices Mondays and Wednesdays from 6 to 8 p.m. and competes in both home and away games. This Saturday, the team will be playing on the home field at Armstrong, and later this month, they will head to Coastal Carolina University for a tournament.
“There’s a couple things we have to work on, for sure,” Ticas said. “But at the end of the day….we want to win.”

Flag Football in Full Swing
Two intramural flag football teams, the ‘Eagles’ and ‘Swag n Surfin,’ faced off on Oct. 15.
Third-year student and team captain of the Eagles, Jackson Fair, shared comments during halftime at the recent game.
“I just come out with my friends, and we play around, try to have fun, win, and get a little competitive,” he said.
Their opponents, Swag n Surfin, were down during halftime, but team captain Riley Upton said the team was getting ready to take advantage of the switch to defense.
Swag n Surfin went on to win the game against the Eagles, 40-12, advancing their season record to 3-0.
The football intramural season will last about 3 weeks through October, with a fourth week of finals. All games will be played on Mondays and Wednesdays on the university’s intramural fields. Learn more about intramural flag football through the IMLeagues portal.

Going to school full time, working and also doing sports. It’s just warms my heart to see young people prioritize their life’s and try to make something of themselves. I am so proud as mother, grandma to those young men and especially proud as an aunt to my nephew Gavin Watkis
