Before the record-setting 23 wins, the Sun Belt dominance, and the historic run to the Women’s Basketball Invitation Tournament (WBIT), the Georgia Southern women’s basketball team had to find its identity. For graduate guard Destiny Garrett, the defining moment of the season didn’t come during a blowout victory, but rather during a hard-fought non-conference battle against Florida State.
“The way we played that game, I knew everyone had heart on the team,” Garrett recalled. “I told everyone after the game to keep their heads up.”
That resilience became the foundation for a team that would go on to reshape the expectations of Georgia Southern women’s basketball. But heart wasn’t just something Garrett saw in her teammates; it was the defining characteristic of her own final collegiate season.
A fixture on the court for the Eagles, Garrett set a new Georgia Southern single-season record for total minutes played, logging 1,108 minutes and averaging a staggering 35.79 minutes per game. Pushing through the physical and mental toll of that milestone required a strong support system and an unshakable internal drive.
“The people around me daily kept me motivated,” Garrett explained. “And I trusted myself to push through even when it seemed challenging.”
That trust paid off. Garrett not only served as the engine for the Eagles’ offense, averaging a team-leading 14.7 points and 3.9 assists per game while earning Second Team All-Sun Belt honors, she also provided the veteran leadership necessary to guide the team through a grueling, triumphant season at the new Jack and Ruth Ann Hill Convocation Center.
When looking back at a collegiate career that began in her home state of Alabama, included a highly decorated stint at Georgia Southwestern State, and culminated in a historic final season in Statesboro, Garrett narrows the entire journey down to a single word.
“Blessing,” she said. “Because I was blessed with a special talent and great opportunities to do so many things and accomplish so many goals in my career.”
As the buzzer sounds on her time at Georgia Southern, Garrett isn’t ready to step off the court just yet. Carrying the same relentless energy that broke records this year, her immediate next step is pursuing a career in professional basketball.
Wherever the game takes her next, Destiny Garrett leaves behind a legacy of endurance, leadership, and a whole lot of heart.
