Spring Break recap
March 24, 2014
To start their Spring Break off right, the women’s tennis team defeated both Western Carolina University and Appalachian State University this past weekend on the courts.
After a six-match losing streak the Eagles were finally able to notch their first Southern Conference win this season against WCU, 5-2. Picking up four singles wins and the doubles point, the Eagles were definitely on their game Saturday.
Junior Jordana Klein, sophomore Mary Phillips Smith, and freshman Giulia Riepe all swiftly overcame their Catamount opponents. In addition, the duos of senior Paola Garrido with Smith, Riepe with sophomore Stephanie Woods, and Klein with sophomore Caitlin Kitchen each easily brought down their WCU competition.
On a rainy Sunday in Statesboro the Eagles were unrelenting towards their crushing defeat over ASU 6-0. Due to the weather, the singles matches preceded doubles. The Eagles overcame all of their ASU opponents prior to the conclusion of any doubles matches, at which point the matches were called due to unfortunate weather, hence the 6-0 victory.
Garrido, Klein, Woods, freshman Daria Vasekina, Smith and Riepe were all responsible for GSU’s unrelenting victory over ASU on Sunday after they each earned swift victories on the courts. This win bumped the Eagles conference record to 2-4.
Unfortunately for the Eagles, when they traveled to Charleston, S.C. on March 20, they were handily defeated 6-1 by the University of Massachusetts. Garrido secured GSU’s only win of the day in the No. 1 singles spot against UM senior Yuliana Motyl 6-4, 6-4. This was a non-conference match which dropped GSU’s overall record to 6-9.
The Eagles were able to end their SoCon spring break streak on a high note with another conference win against Davidson College 5-2.
GSU began the match securing two of the three doubles wins and going into singles play with the 1-0 lead. Garrido, Woods, Riepe, and Smith each defeated their DC opponents to assist in the Eagles strong victory over the Wildcats.
GSU now holds an overall record of 7-9 along with a 3-4 SoCon record for the season.
