You might imagine the life of the online editor of Reflector Magazine would be filled with glamour and glitz, but you’d be wrong. It was filled with Starbucks, puppies and procrastination.
Friday.
My little brother’s birthday was spent hard at work for four whole hours. I had to listen to my customers keep telling me, “Cheer up, it’s Friday!” Guess who doesn’t stop working on Friday? Me, Sharon. Thanks for your concern. I spent the evening hanging out with friends before they left town and contemplating the sad excuse of a break I was about to have.
Saturday.
Clocked in to Starbucks at 5:30 a.m. Eastern Standard Time. Not entirely awake, I stuck out my shift until 11 a.m. and then clocked OUT.
Sunday.
I lost an hour of sleep, so getting to work at 6 in the morning felt like a 5 a.m. Monday shift. Gross. I left Starbucks at 11 a.m. and I swear my puppies have never been happier to see me. After getting gas and taking care of my puppies, I loaded everything into the car and headed north to visit my parents. Just kidding, not everything. I left a water bottle inside, took 14 seconds to run back in and get it, and came back out to find my retriever mix Sloan trying to figure out how to work the pedals. I got him out of the front seat and hopped in and took off. We made it past three accidents and my right foot got tired of puttering down the highway, so I hustled my old Camry up to 80 and we still beat my parents to their house. My whole family ended the night roasting s’mores under the back porch.
Monday.
Started out my day with an oil change and an air filter swap for my car. (Thanks for buying all that stuff, Dad.) I came inside after hearing my pups whining for me to come back and finishing up my oil and got started on my next fun adult task: taxes. Thanks to Mom and TurboTax for getting me through that! After dinner, I loaded the car up again and had an uneventful drive back to Statesboro. I made it there and back on one tank of gas, which is quite impressive considering how aggressive I had to be to deal with Atlanta traffic.
Tuesday.
I got to sleep until 5:45 for my shift at 6:15 a.m. so Tuesday started off on a good note. After work, I dashed home to take my puppies out before a doctor’s appointment. That evening, my boyfriend James came over after he closed his restaurant and we took a late night drive to Tybee Island with my friend Noah. I knew that at some point over break I had to go to the beach, so I made it happen on Tuesday. There’s just something so powerful about the beach at night.
Wednesday.
Slept in, thank you, Lord Jesus, after getting back home around 2 a.m. James kept me company until he went to work, and my pile of laundry grew ever higher – it had been neglected since my return trip to Statesboro.
Thursday.
Another 5 a.m. shift. Good morning, Statesboro! I left work before many other stay-at-home spring breakers had woken up at 10:30 and had the rest of my day free. After lunch, my boyfriend and I wandered around campus. I walked my dogs while he caught Pokémon. Later that evening, while James worked, I went over to Noah’s house and we colored our hair a lovely shade of green in anticipation of St. Patrick’s Day.
Friday.
I didn’t have any official St. Pat’s plans, so a group of friends who were still in town hung out at Noah’s and played Mario Kart and had a few cocktails. Let me tell you, Rainbow Road was a really fun track to try while slightly intoxicated.
Saturday.
I worked two shifts at two different Starbucks! I opened my store here in Statesboro, left at 10:45, then picked up my coworker Lexie and we carpooled out to the Starbucks at the intersection of Bull St. and Broughton St. in downtown Savannah. We were expecting the store to be going up in flames – after all, why else would they ask for TWO extra people from a store an hour away? We got there in plenty of time to clock in at 4 and there were about 20 people in the store and 17 of them were in line for the bathroom. Lexie and I worked four hours in one of the most chill Starbucks I’ve ever visited, and we got mileage bonuses for commuting all that way. I thought it was really cool to work there because that was only the third store that I had ever worked at, and some of my fellow baristas have worked at several locations.
Sunday.
Had my longest shift of the week back here in Statesboro from 7:45 a.m. to 3:45 p.m. Lord have mercy, there were some “fun” customers that day. I needed a margarita or ten and another break before I started up classes again at 9:05 Monday morning.
I still haven’t done my laundry.
