Eagle Creek has been a source of tradition for the Statesboro community and Georgia Southern for years.
In 1981 the football program was resurrected at the helm of head coach Erk Russell. The traditions needed a resurrection as well.
Coach Russell gave a little ditch the team walked across to get to the field a mythical like presence and labeled it beautiful eagle creek.
Bruce olliff has lived in Statesboro for 50 years and knows the magic of the creek firsthand.
“It comes across the run around runs from the branch behind the pond goes all the way to a Georgia power right of way basically takes a hard left, runs through the railroad tracks near azalea circle and out under 301 that is where it becomes beautiful Eagle creek.”
The drainage ditch that lays along main street wraps all the way around to the practice fields. Russell convinced the players the water was magic.
Traditions are still used today in the football program like baptizing the seniors before each season and bringing a jug of water on the road.
Georgia Southern plays their first football game September 2nd. See beautiful eagle creek before the game.
“I’m in an undisclosed location here where eagle creek starts there is a pond where it starts it has been here for many, many years if you are a fan of Georgia southern football of course you know eagle creek and the lore behind it and where Erk Russell created a magic water to provide players with championship spirits where they were able to win several championship football games.”
