Philosophy After Dark is welcoming all philosophy-curious students together at Eagle Creek Brewing Company, every Thursday at 6:30 PM. Often hosted by philosophy professors, Dr. Larkin, Dr. Eaton, and Dr. Ransom, they believe “Curiosity doesn’t have a curfew”.
How did it start?
Six years ago at Georgia Southern, Dr. Larkin and Dr. Eaton chose an off campus setting for Philosophy After Dark for a reason.
“We wanted to make this more informal,” Dr. Larkin explained. “If you’re in a classroom, you have that same mentality. But here it’s very informal. You can get food and if you’re of age? You can have a beer, you can relax. And it just creates an atmosphere where, instead of us lecturing, we’re all in the conversation together. It really is a completely different vibe.”
What is it about?
Philosophy isn’t just about studying ancient philosophers, it is a way to think and ask questions.
“Historically, some of the best philosophy has been done in cafes and informal settings… It’s a recreational activity” Dr. Eaton said.
Students meet with professors at Eagle Creek with a predetermined topic in mind. Students are able to talk about certain topics without judgment and with an open mind. The goal is to be conversational about topics that might be hard to talk about in a classroom setting. The topic on Sept. 5 was on justice: “Is being just worth it?”. There are other more and less political topics each week.
“I’ve attended Philosophy After Dark a few times… I like that there is no pressure to speak and I can still watch the conversations unfold,” student Gabe Garverick said. “I’m an education major but I still come to meetings to have fun and wind down… I’m sure this is open to any majors and anyone who likes philosophy”.
How to join:
Simply show up to Eagle Creek Brewing company on Thursdays, and meet upstairs. Everyone is welcome no matter your major.
