STATESBORO, Ga. – Georgia Southern (2-9) baseball rallied from a six-run deficit to defeat USC Upstate (7-6), 9-8 on Sunday afternoon at J.I. Clements Stadium, securing the Eagles’ first series win of the season
USC Upstate struck first in the opening inning when Tyler Lang hit a two-run home run just over the left-field line to give the Spartans an early 2-0 lead.
Georgia Southern answered in the second inning as Sean White and Bryson Trammell hit back-to-back doubles, cutting the deficit in half. The Spartans responded in the third inning with two runs off three singles and aggressive baserunning to extend their lead.
USC Upstate broke the game open in the fifth inning. After loading the bases with no outs, a run scored on a walk before Georgia Southern reliever Will Robbins entered and forced a double play at the plate for the first two outs. Moments later, Wylie Waters delivered a two-RBI single to push the Spartans’ lead to 7-1.
The Eagles began their comeback in the bottom half of the inning. White drove in a run with an RBI single before Trammell doubled for the second time in the game, bringing home two more runs to cut the deficit to 7-4.
Georgia Southern added another run in the sixth inning when Nico Senese scored on an errant throw during a double-play attempt, trimming the Spartans’ lead to 7-5.
The Eagles completed the comeback in the eighth inning. Two walks and a single by John Davis loaded the bases before Jack Myers hit a ground ball that deflected off the throw to second base, allowing a run to score.
Two batters later, Trammell delivered the decisive hit, lining his fourth double of the afternoon down the right-field line to clear the bases and give Georgia Southern a 9-9 lead.
USC Upstate threatened in the ninth inning with runners on the corners and two outs, but a groundout to shortstop ended the game and secured the series victory for the Eagles.
Bryson Trammell finished the day with four doubles and six RBIs, setting a Georgia Southern single-game record for doubles. Alex Mason earned his first career win after pitching two scoreless innings in relief, allowing one hit while striking out two batters.
After trailing 7-1 in the fifth inning, the comeback marked Georgia Southern’s largest comeback victory since April 16, 2022.
The Eagles will face the Citadel Bulldogs at 6 P.M. on Wednesday, March 4 in Charleston.
