Gamers Win Athletic Scholarships for playing League of Legends

Chris Rossmann

Have you spent countless hours playing a competitive video game and had your parents tell you that you’re wasting your time?

Robert Morris University, a college in Illinois, offered the first-ever athletic scholarship for online gaming, announcing that they are now offering 35 scholarships for their League of Legends team.

“League of Legends is a fast-paced, competitive online game that “blends the spend and intensity of an real time strategy game with role playing elements. Two teams of powerful champions, each with unique design and play style, battle head-to-head across multiple battlefields and game modes.” – League of Legends FAQ.

The immense increase in popularity of eSports, and specifically League of Legends, has driven the University to take the team seriously.

Over 1,000 online tournaments are listed on the League of Legends official website, with many including cash pay-outs for the winners.
