Over 20 students gathered at the Recreation Activity Center (RAC) on Saturday morning to attend “Pilates for Paws,” a special GroupFit class with a chance to give back to the community. While it was your typical pilates routine, participants were encouraged to bring donations for the local animal shelter. Boxes sat at the front of the room filled with toys, dog food and treats.
As students walked in, dozens of “adopt me” posters showcased dogs ready for adoption at the shelter. Jaclyn Lepre, a junior at Georgia Southern, planned the event and taught the class. She was excited to be a part of something that gives back to the community. “I grew up with dogs my whole life,” she explained. “Being able to bring awareness and donations means the world to me.” Lepre worked with Trish Evans, GroupFit Director, to put the event together, but the organization began with Lepre working closely with the shelter.
“We were going to have them bring the animals here, but they did not have enough time,” Lepre said, detailing the planning process. “I reached out to them and told them I was still holding the event and that I would collect as many donations as I can.”
Lepre led the class through a 45-minute full-body workout, ending it with a relaxing five-minute cool-down. Pilates has become one of the most popular GroupFit classes, averaging around 20-25 people per class.
Throughout her time at Georgia Southern, Lepre has spent time volunteering at the shelter, even if it’s just taking the dogs out and playing with them. Following the class, she invited students to come with her to volunteer. Giving back to the community is something she thinks is important for students. “We need to build our community,” Lepre said. “In a world where things are a little crazy right now, it’s important to just remember these things and remember to give back and be kind.”
Lepre has been teaching GroupFit for one year, and she has been a part of a few special events, including Glowchella, Partner Yoga, and now Pilates for Paws. GroupFit hosts several special events each semester, all of which are free for students and faculty. For the full schedule, click here.
