Competing against nationally recognized universities, Georgia Southern’s Eagle Ethics Team rose to the challenge, finishing third at the Mid-Atlantic Regional Intercollegiate Ethics Bowl and earning their second appearance at the National Intercollegiate Ethics Bowl competition. The team is coached by Dr. Paul Tubig, Assistant Professor of Philosophy, and Dr. David Wong, visiting Professor of Philosophy from the University of Cincinnati.
The Eagle Ethics Team was founded in 2023 by Dr. Tubig, after a group of Georgia Southern philosophy students expressed interest in creating an Ethics Bowl team. Dr. Tubig has coached Ethics Bowl teams at other institutions in the past, and Georgia Southern is the first institution he has led to the national competition.
Dr. Wong joined the team in 2024 after finding the opportunity interesting and wanting to show his support for the students. When asked about the importance of ethical education, Dr. Wong said, “It is important to really think through social, moral and political issues. Ethical training allows us to empower ourselves to form opinions that we endorse with good reasons.”
Georgia Southern’s Eagle Ethics Team placed third at the Mid-Atlantic Regional Intercollegiate Ethics Bowl on Nov. 8, 2025, competing against 20 teams from 18 colleges and universities, including the University of Georgia, Georgia State University, Georgia Tech, the University of Florida, and LSU. This achievement marks the team’s second consecutive third-place finish at the regional competition, following another third-place placement in 2024.
Their strong performance secured a spot at the National Intercollegiate Ethics Bowl, where they will compete against 36 teams from across the United States. The national competition will be held March 7–8, 2026, in St. Louis, Missouri, marking the team’s second appearance at the national level.
In addition to their competitive success, the Eagle Ethics Team also received the Bob Ladenson Spirit of Ethics Bowl Award in 2025. This award recognizes the national championship team that best embodies the core values, spirit, and ideals of the Ethics Bowl. Based on cumulative performance, the Eagle Ethics Team is currently ranked 13th overall among all colleges in the nation participating in the Ethics Bowl.
When asked about their time since joining the Ethics Team, members have said:
“It’s a lot of work but it’s been rewarding. I think I made the majority of my friends from this club!” – Cade Huff, President of the Eagles Ethics Team
”A huge skill I’ve taken away is how people can have a civil conversation and come to an agreement with people I don’t necessarily agree with on the broader topic as a whole.” –Cooper Powers
”It’s a pretty good experience. I started off very, very anxious and not very confident at all, but overtime I gained more confidence. It’s nice having the support of your team even if you’re struggling.” – Neo Zheng
”It’s really a lot of fun. Making new friends and I’ve really enjoyed myself.” – Skyy-Marley Golighty
”Ethics is a great way to interact with new ideas, reforming your own preconceived concepts and really dealing with a lot of ethical issues that you might be uncomfortable doing.” – Andy Isom
