Welcome, Eagles, to the first day of your new life! Whether you are fresh out of high school or perhaps you took a gap year, you are now stepping into a world that is unlike anything you have traversed before, so here are a few tips to help prepare yourself for Operation Move-In.
Tip #1: Protect Your Belongings With Renter’s Insurance
To start things off, Georgia Southern Housing strongly advises that students in residence halls carry individual renter’s insurance for his or her personal property if it is damaged. Georgia Southern is partnered with GradGuard, which offers an easy solution to purchasing renters’ insurance that you may access via the on-campus housing application portal. This way, damaged items will be covered by the renters’ insurance, and students affected will not have to worry about replacing them.
Tip #2: Get In Contact With Your New Roommate(s) ASAP
If you have not already, get in contact with your future roommate(s)! You all will be living in a shared space, so it is best to get to know one another as soon as possible and come up with a plan for decorating your dorm. Being in contact with one another early will also help with avoiding purchasing duplicates, so make sure to create a list with one another! Also, do not forget to check Georgia Southern’s official “What to Bring & What Not to Bring” list, which you can access here.
Tip #3: A Peek at Operation Move-In Day
Before anything, make sure you have selected your move-in timeslot, which you may access via your on-campus housing portal. Operation: Move-In Day is going to be overwhelming at first, but fortunately, Georgia Southern Housing will have volunteers helping out with moving students into their dorms. Students will be allowed to bring family members and friends to help with moving in, but Georgia Southern asks that the number of people brought be limited for safety reasons. Your residence hall will also provide you with moving bins to easily move your items from your vehicle to your dorm.
Tip #4: Prepare for the Excitement
Your first night at Georgia Southern is certainly a memory that is going to last. You will be in a new place, in a new room, in a new bed, and it is all going to seem alien at first, but soon you will find that this home away from home is sure to take care of you. So go out, have fun, make memories, and do not forget to stay safe. Good luck!
