Georgia Southern football evened its record at 2-2 on Saturday, defeating Maine 45-17 at Paulson Stadium in Statesboro. The Eagles improved to 2-0 at home, while Maine fell to 0-4.
The first half was a mixed bag for the Eagles. Despite holding a 17-14 lead at halftime, Georgia Southern struggled with missed catches, incomplete passes, and turnovers that allowed Maine to stay close. The Black Bears scored the game’s first touchdown and later added a pick-six, keeping the Eagles’ lead narrow. Still, Georgia Southern’s composure never wavered, and the team looked to regroup during the break.
The second half became the turning point. Georgia Southern came out energized and methodical, using a mix of trick plays and balanced offensive sets to keep Maine guessing. A 44-yard pass from Dalen Cobb to Camden Brown set up freshman quarterback Weston Bryan’s first collegiate touchdown, a moment that highlighted the team’s growing depth and the increasing roles of younger players. “We’re going to need them this season,” JC French said, acknowledging the importance of these contributions as the Eagles navigate conference play.

Key plays defined the momentum shift. On one drive, a muffed punt by Maine led to a short-field touchdown pass from OJ Arnold to Brown, extending the lead and demoralizing the Black Bears. The defense also delivered, forcing two turnovers and stopping Maine on crucial third- and fourth-down attempts, which prevented any chance of a comeback.
From that moment, Georgia Southern fully took control. The Eagles scored 28 second-half points while holding Maine scoreless. JC French finished 19-for-31 passing for 253 yards, a touchdown, and an interception, showing poise under pressure. Brown recorded six catches for 118 yards and a touchdown, and OJ Arnold added 85 rushing yards, a rushing touchdown, and a touchdown pass to Brown. Defensively, MJ Stroud led the charge with two and a half sacks and another tackle for loss, forcing turnovers at critical moments and helping maintain momentum.
Coach Clay Helton praised the team’s execution: “The maturity of this team really showed in the second half. They took a deep breath, played clean football, and executed the way we’ve been asking. The defense went out and won this game, giving up only 10 points and forcing key stops when it mattered.” Helton also highlighted how the team’s unpredictable mix of quarterbacks and offensive weapons disrupted Maine’s defensive rhythm, turning small advantages into scoring drives.
The Eagles’ performance demonstrated how a team can recover from early miscues by relying on depth, discipline, and situational awareness. The 516 total yards marked Georgia Southern’s most productive game since September 2023, and the way the offense and defense complemented each other illustrated a well-rounded approach that could serve the team well in Sun Belt play.
Next Game: Georgia Southern will visit James Madison for a Sun Belt matchup at 1:30 p.m. on Saturday, September 27.
