It was a split decision for Georgia Southern basketball on Wednesday night, as the women’s team claimed first place with a big victory while the men fell to a surging rival. Here is the recap of the doubleheader from Statesboro.
Women’s Basketball: Eagles Rise to First Place with Win Over Arkansas State
The Georgia Southern women’s basketball team moved to the top of the Sun Belt Conference standings on Wednesday, defeating Arkansas State 69-60.
The Eagles wasted no time taking control, opening the game with an 11-0 run to energize the home crowd. Their efficient offense and strong rebounding helped them build a comfortable 15-point lead by halftime.
Arkansas State didn’t go away quietly, however. The Red Wolves caught fire from long range in the second half, using a flurry of three-pointers to chip away at the lead and eventually cut the deficit to just three points. Facing a shift in momentum, the Eagles responded with a decisive 7-0 run to push the lead back to double digits and secure the victory.
Head Coach Hana Haden praised her team’s ability to withstand the run and execute when it mattered most.
“I thought we showed a lot of toughness tonight,” Haden said. “To build that lead, lose it, and then have the composure to get it back and finish the game against a team as good as Arkansas State says a lot about the character of this group.”
With the win, the Eagles (18-6, 11-2 SBC) break the tie in the standings and now sit alone in first place.
Men’s Basketball: Eagles Fall to App State
In the second game of the night, the Georgia Southern men’s team couldn’t keep pace with Appalachian State, falling 81-65.
The Mountaineers were led by a dominant performance from Kasen Jennings, who scored a game-high 31 points. App State used their scoring power to control the game and pull away for its seventh straight win.
Tyren Moore was the bright spot for the Eagles, leading the team with 17 points and six assists. Spudd Webb also chipped in with 12 points, and Khayri Dunn added 10, but Georgia Southern (14-12, 6-7 SBC) struggled to get enough stops on defense to close the gap.
