STATESBORO—The math and physics building on the Georgia Southern University Statesboro campus has reopened after being closed since Monday afternoon due to possible asbestos in an HVAC duct.

On Tuesday, the university contracted an external consultant to perform an air monitoring test and results showed that the building was safe for reopening.

“Repeated air monitoring will take place following the abatement to ensure the building continues to remain safe for occupants,” said Kathryn V. Twining, associate vice president for facilities in an email. “The containment area includes corridor 2086 and affects the following rooms – 2060, 2061, 2061A/B/C/D/E, 2062, and 2062 A/B/C.”

More tests are set to be run Wednesday and the listed rooms are still under containment. 

Twining and the university are anticipating the rest of the remaining containment areas to be clear on Friday.
