Armstrong’s Sigma Alpha Epsilon (SAE) fraternity will be participating in its first “Movember” beginning this week. This makes the only fraternity on campus to participate in Movember, so named because another aspect of the program challenges brothers to exercise daily.
“You always hear about women’s and children’s health, but seldom about men’s health,” says Dustin Stewart, SAE treasurer. “Movemeber is an effort to help change that.”
“Each brother [fraternity member] has been challenged to raise $50 by the end of the month,” Stewart said. He hopes his fundraising efforts will honor the life of his uncle who recently died after an extended battle with cancer. All proceeds from the event will be donated to Movember.com.
SAE president Marshall Bailey agreed. “We want to promote men’s health and well-being, Movember is a good start for that.”
The brothers want to emphasize the importance of daily activity for men’s health while maintaining the importance of prostate and testicular cancer.
“Along with promoting cancer awareness, we are encouraging all SAE brothers to exercise at least once daily during the month of November,” Bailey said.
Stewart encourages all students, not just SAE brothers, to do more research on Movember. “We grow out our [mustaches] to get the conversation started, but the real progress is made when students take initiative.”
