DIY: Cheap Dorm Room Enhancements

Ashton Christianson

Anyone who has lived in a dorm knows that it can be hard and expensive to make it your own. To try to help with this, here are some cheap easy DIY projects that you can use to enhance your place for cheap.

Cork Board

Total cost: Around $10

Where At: Walmart

Cork boards can be plain looking to have just hanging on your wall, but, with a little paint, they can add a pop of color to your room.

Things you need:

  • Four cork boards
  • A color of paint of your choice
  • Paint tape
  • Paint brush

The first thing you will want to do is to use the paint tape to create a triangle in a corner of the cork board. Then add another line of paint tape in between the first line and the triangle. Once you have finished this, there should a small triangle within your big triangle.

The next thing you need to do is pick out a color that will match your rooms color scheme and paint the triangles you have created. After you have finished painting, remove the paint tape carefully and let it dry.

Once it’s dry simply add command strips to the back of your boards to hang them on your wall with the painted sides creating a diamond.

As students, there are tons of little things, such as staples and thumb tacks, that we have stuffed in drawers or random places. A better way to take control of this clutter mess and make it more neat is to use create an organizer.

These circler dishes help to keep all your small items together along with adding an unique look to your study area. With the magnets on the back of them, all you need to do is to put them on anything metal to hang them on. Another option is to stick a magnetic strip on to your wall.

There are also plenty of other desk organizers, along with supplies, that can be found at the Dollar Tree.

Another way to help organize things is to buy plastic bins at the Dollar Tree. These bins can be used in closets to organize socks or items such as notebooks.

These bins won’t look too appealing in everyones room with the colors they come in, but spray paint can easily solve this problem. When you are picking out the spray paint be sure to get one that is compatible with plastic.

Total Cost: Varies

Where At: Walmart

Instead of spending time and money on posters, make them cheaply yourself. With just a pencil, tape and paint you can create almost anything you want.

At Walmart you can buy a pack of three canvas for around $7 but the amount of paint you choose can cause the cost to vary.

As seen above, the design is simple with straight lines and calligraphy. The lines were made using paint tape and different colors.
