In the State of the University address, GS was said to be at almost 26 thousand students, which is a 5 percent decrease from last fall.

Why it matters: “An enrollment decline results in a tighter budget for everyone at the university, including departments,” said Department Chair of Literature, Dr. Elizabeth Howells.

  • “Perhaps the biggest concern is when faculty leave or retire, they might not be replaced immediately. This will be a year where hiring will be at a minimum,” said Howells.
  • This will not be the year to invest in supplemental technology and travel might be prioritized for faculty on the tenure track speaking at conferences.
  • When the final census is done, they are expecting about a 6 percent decrease
