Hurricane Matthew aftermath in Bulloch County

Tropical storm-force winds from Hurricane Matthew blew through Bulloch and the surrounding counties Friday evening and into Saturday morning, leaving plenty of damage and even death’s behind.

The high winds and a heavy downfall of rain left power lines down, many uprooted and fallen trees along with lots of other property damage. A large pecan tree collapsed in Sweetheart Circle and Kennedy Hall suffered minor roof damage due to a pine tree falling against the side of the building. Thousands of residents were without power Friday night, and some of the last few houses did not regain power until Sunday night.

Hurricane Matthew devastated Statesboro beyond just knocking out power and trees; two men were killed early Saturday morning on Burkhalter and Clay Road. Bulloch County Deputy Coroner, Richard Pylant has confirmed that both of the deaths were caused by severe weather during by Hurricane Matthew.

Matthew Ward, a 27-year-old died as a result of injuries that he sustained after a tree collided with the vehicle he was driving. James Altman, whose age is currently unknown,  was also killed after a tree fell on his residence.
