Hurricane Season is Coming, Here’s How to Stay Safe

Anna Claire Edenfield, Events & Organization Editor, Reflector

As the middle of September creeps up, we approach peak hurricane season in Georgia. While living near the coast has its benefits there’s always the chance of being affected by a hurricane. Here are some helpful tips to be prepared in the event of one.

  • Keep yourself updated by watching news updates
  • Purchase supplies like food, water, and gas days ahead of time to avoid long lines
  • Charge your phone and check flashlight batteries
  • Download the ReadyGA app for important emergency information updates
  • Check the University Alert webpage for cancellations, campus closings, and announcements
  • Follow evacuation orders from local and University officials
  • Never leave pets behind in the event of an evacuation
  • Check in with friends and family using text messages or social media (cellular lines can become overloaded)
  • Take important papers like your driver’s license, passport, birth certificate, etc. during an evacuation

In the unfortunate event of a hurricane, it’s important to use resources through Georgia Southern Emergency Management and Bulloch County Emergency Management to stay informed and updated.
