Reflector Reviews: The Tortured Poets Department

On April 19, Taylor Swift released her 11th studio album, “The Tortured Poets Department, ” which was nothing short of amazing. I love Swift’s music because of her extraordinary storytelling; this album had plenty of that. I stayed up until midnight to get a first listen, but the night didn’t end there. After lots of clues and easter eggs, Swift announced at 2 a.m. that it was a double album, and there were 15 more songs.

After listening to it in its entirety, I can say that it is a pretty good album, and people seem to agree. The day after the album came out, Spotify took to Instagram to say, “On April 19, 2024, The Tortured Poets Department became Spotify’s most-streamed album in a single day, and Taylor Swift became the most-streamed artist in a single day in Spotify history.”

Most people who hear the name ‘Taylor Swift’ may immediately think of her love life, and she is known for telling those stories through her music. After talking to a few students about the new album, I learned why this album grabs so many people’s attention. Jayra Hernandez, freshman, said, “I really liked the lyricism, and I love sad songs, too.” Another freshman, Brooke Morris, said, “You can really tell she put her whole heart in it. Every song has a deeper meaning and I love trying to figure it all out.”

Packed from start to finish with emotion, heartbreak, betrayal, and even love, the full tracklist can be found here, written by ScreenRant.

It’s a lot to take in, I know. Picking a favorite song to hyper-fixate on is my favorite thing to do when a new album comes out. With this one, there are a few I have been rotating through. My top 4 right now are “Who’s Afraid Of Little Old Me?,” “I Can Do It With A Broken Heart,” “But Daddy I Love Him,” and “The Smallest Man Who Ever Lived.”

  • Skylar Ramey, Sophomore, said her favorite song was “I Can Fix Him (No Really I Can).”
  • Brooke Morris, Freshman, said her favorite, although hard to choose, was “So High School.”
  • Alayna Yacobucci, Freshman, claimed “The Prophecy” as her favorite.
  • Lastly, Jayra Hernandez, Freshman, picked “So Long, London.”

As a self-proclaimed Swiftie, I have thoroughly enjoyed this album. It’s definitely worth checking out, even if you aren’t a swiftie. I hope everyone enjoys it at least a little bit!
