With winter break on the horizon, exams are on the way. Before the holiday season comes and everyone starts traveling, it might be a good idea to find a little time to take a mini road trip with friends. Savannah is always a good getaway destination, but if you feel like traveling a little further, Charleston, South Carolina is only about two and a half hours away. Similar to Savannah, Charleston has a lot to offer in many different settings. Here are some fun things to do on your road trip to Charleston:

  • Charleston City Market: Taking a stroll through the Charleston City Market is a great way to spend the day, especially if there is nice weather. You find cute little shops, free samples, and enjoy the history of one of the oldest markets in the south.
  • Folly Beach: Just twelve miles south from downtown Charleston, Folly Beach is perfect to visit if you are looking for a nice place to picnic, take beach pictures, or enjoy shopping around the surf and souvenir shops. After a fun road trip and day at the beach when you’re feeling hungry, check out restaurants like Taco Boy, Lost Dog Cafe, Woody’s Pizza, and Jack of Cups Saloon, which has vegan, vegetarian, and gluten free options.
  • Spooky Sightseeing: Even though the spooky season is over, you can still enjoy activities like ghost tours and haunted houses in one of the nation’s most haunted cities. Visit places like The Battery Carriage House, The Old Charleston Jail, The Dock Street Theatre, and The Old Exchange and Provost Dungeon on your own or check out some ghost tours that will guide you through all the scary locations.
  • King Street and Bay Street: The idea that you don’t have to buy anything when you shop might come in handy when visiting King Street in Charleston. Known as one of the most famous streets in Charleston for its shopping, restaurants, art galleries, and history. Luxury stores like Gucci, Louis Vuitton, and Kate Spade are fun to look through, but there are also plenty of more affordable options or other ways to spend time like the Time Traveler Escape Game. Bay Street also has a lot to offer and includes fun sights like Rainbow Row, South Carolina Aquarium, Joe Riley Waterfront Park, and the City Gallery.
  • For the ride: Remember that the best part of a road trip is the actual drive and to make the most out of it. Plan out the fun things like snacks, games, music playlists, and maybe even interesting conversations that will pass the time. Long car rides are a great way to enjoy time with your roommates, friends, or a significant other before the holidays and exams sneak up on you.
