Many students fall under the umbrella of being neurodivergent and struggle completing assignments and functioning their lives daily at Georgia Southern University and it is important to know how to cope and find resolutions to help make college life more manageable.
What does Neurodivergent Mean?
Neurodivergent is defined by Oxford Languages Dictionary as “someone who differs in mental or neurological function from what is considered typical or normal; not neurotypical ”.
Most Common Types of Neuro Minorities:
- Autism or Autism Spectrum Disorders
- ADD (Attention Deficit Disorder) and ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder)
- Tourette Syndrome
- Dyslexia
- Mental Health
- DCD/ Dyspraxia
- Dyscalculia
- OCD
- Anxiety
Helpful Tips for Neurodivergent College Students:
- Get an agenda and color coordinate folders, binders, and pens to go with each study area.
- Use Noise Cancellation Headphones when studying for a test.
- Use colored overlays when reading to avoid the letters from looking blurry or moving while reading.
- Review notes from each class at the end of each day to study each day instead of cramming before the test.
- Talk to your professor about ways to help you succeed in class and be provided with adequate accommodations that best fit your needs.
