Fourth Quarter:

The Georgia Southern University football team held on late to beat The Citadel 28-21 at Allen E. Paulson Stadium.

GSU held a 20-14 lead until a fumble on the pitch by redshirt freshman quarterback Kevin Ellison was returned for a touchdown by Citadel junior safety Akeem Garnett.

GSU would respond with a long drive on the arm and legs of Ellison.  He completed a key third down pass to senior running back Johnathan Bryant and had a nice scramble on second and 20 to keep the drive alive.

Ellison capped the game winning 86 yard drive with a five yard rushing touchdown.  A two point conversion put the Eagles on top 28-21.

The defense made a crucial last stand to preserve the 28-21 win for the Eagles.

Third Quarter:

GSU pounced on The Citadel right out of the locker room with some big plays in the running game.

Redshirt freshman quarterback Kevin Ellison would tie his career long with a 53 yard run on the Eagles’ first drive of the third quarter.  Senior running back Johnathan Bryant would finish the drive with a three yard run to the corner of the end zone.

Bryant’s touchdown was the only score of third quarter and put the Eagles ahead 20-7.

Second Quarter:

The Eagles got off to a much better start in the second quarter thanks to the passing game.  Redshirt freshman quarterback Kevin Ellison completed a 45 yard pass to sophomore wide receiver B.J Johnson.

With the Eagles in the red zone and threatening to score on third down Ellison would fumble the snap and nearly kill the drive.  GSU would recover and McKinnon would score on fourth down from seven yards out.

Ellison would set up the Eagles with a 48 yard dash down the sideline, but a fumble on fourth down kept GSU from scoring again.  GSU kept The Citadel out of the end zone in the second quarter to take a 13-7 lead into the locker room.

First Quarter:

After both teams went three and out on their first possession the Citadel struck first on the scoreboard.

Citadel senior quarterback Ben Dupree broke a 73 yard run off right tackle to give the Bulldogs a 7-0 lead.  The defense over pursued and Dupree hit the hole hard.

GSU would not stay down for long thanks to senior quarterback Jerick McKinnon.  After being called for a false start McKinnon would redeem himself with a 63 yard run.  Two plays later McKinnon was celebrating in the end zone after a three yard touchdown run.
