GSU baseball adds 11 true freshman and three transfers

Georgia Southern University’s baseball team signed 14 new student-athletes for the 2014 signing class, head coach Rodney Hennon said.

The class includes 11 true freshman and three junior college transfers from Gordon College. All but one of the players are from Georgia. Of the 14 incoming recruits, eight are pitchers and six are position players.

Included in this year’s class are: Cal Baker (Cylo, Ga.), Akeem Bostick (Florence, S.C.), C.J. Brazil (Marietta, Ga.), Ryan Cleveland (Toccoa, Ga.), Avery Fagan (Loganville, Ga.), Dustin Fowler (Cadwell, Ga.), Jordan Howard (Cordele, Ga.), Zach Jones (Thomaston, Ga.), Adam Kelly (Gainesville, Ga.), Aaron Mizell (McRae, Ga.), Tyler Payne (Macon, Ga.), Caleb Pressy (Swainsboro, Ga.), Patrick Smith (Kennesaw, Ga.) and Josh Wirsu (Harlem, Ga.).

Baker is currently playing infield for Effingham County High school. He batted .444 during the Rebel’s 2011 Playoff run. He has also been a Top-100 selection twice in his high school career.

Bostick, a right handed pitcher from South Carolina is currently ranked as the number one pitcher in all of South Carolina. He has been selected to numerous All-State and All-American teams, and he has also won an award for best offensive arm.

Brazil currently plays catcher for Trinity Catholic High School where he has been awarded the school’s Golden Glove award. He has been to the elite eight twice with the Titans.

Cleveland is an infielder for Stephens County High School. He was named All-Region, and was selected to the WWBA Tournament his junior season.

Fagan is a right handed pitcher from Loganville, Ga. He spent his freshman year at George Walton Academy befor transferring to Loganville High School for his final three seasons. He helped the Red Devils to two regional victories, a final four appearance, and a state championship. He is recognized as the no. 19 player in Georgia.

Fowler plays for West Laurens High School and is one of their starting outfielders. The Georgia Dugout Club named Fowler as a Top-100 player, and he was named to the Georgia High School All-Middle Georgia team. He was selected as a Region 2-AAA player of the year and a First Team Outfielder.

Howard is a right handed pitcher from Crisp Academy in Cordele, Ga. He led his team in home runs and was second in batting average. He led his team to two state runner-ups, and one state championship.

Jones is a transfer from Gordon College. He was a starting pitcher for them and struck out 13 batters in the 14.1 innings he pitched last season. He also pitched in the Junior College World Series last year.

Kelly is a starting pitcher from North Hall High School. He was named to the WWBA 18U All-Tournament team and received the pre-season Honorable Mention All-American reward.

Mizell is another transfer from Gordon College. He went to Telfair High School in McRae, Ga. He holds the single season record at his high school for most homeruns with 10, and least strikeouts with four.

Payne is a starting pitcher for Stratford Academy in Macon, Ga. During his junior season he had a 5-4 record with an earned run average of 1.91. He also threw five complete games. He has earned All-State and All-region honors and has been selected to Team Georgia.

Pressey is a starting pitcher for Emanuel County Institute in Swainsboro, Ga. He posted the team’s lowest ERA of 1.11 and is a two time 3A First Team All-Region selection.

Smith plays catcher for North Cobb High School in Kennesaw, Ga. He helped lead his team to a 17-9 season, along with a Region 4AAAAA win over McEachern last season.

Wirsu is a transfer from Gordon College. During his high school career at Harlem High School, Wirsu was twice named Pitcher of the Year and All-Region. He was selected All-County and All-Area in 2010 and 2011. During his senior year he struck out 156 batters in 120 innings pitched with an ERA of 2.69.
