Armstrong will host an 80th birthday celebration Tuesday, April 26, in the Residential Plaza. In addition to celebrating Armstrong’s birthday, the year-end event will also mark 50 years in Southside Savannah.

“Armstrong was founded in the mansion located at the very north end of Forsyth Park in downtown Savannah. We were established by the city of Savannah and the mansion was a gift to the city of Savannah from the family of George F. Armstrong,” assistant dean of Student Integrity,  Andrew Dies, said. Dies was also a member of the event’s planning committee.

The Armstrong House is located at Bull and Gaston Streets. Armstrong remained there until it moved to the current campus in 1966.

“We will have a photo booth, party favors, music, cake, and other desserts to celebrate,” said Lucy Aradillas, a member of the Student Affairs Expo Committee.

The event-planning committee is made up of different people from the Division of Student Affairs and is chaired by Dr. Georj Lewis.

The committee is working to make the party not just about Armstrong’s birthday and anniversary, but also about Armstrong’s most valuable asset: the students.

Leading up to the event, there will be tables set up in the Student Union and at other events around campus allowing students to fill out birthday wishes for Armstrong. The birthday wishes will provide Armstrong students a way to tell their story and how Armstrong helped them.

“The idea behind the birthday wishes was to get [students] to give a little insight into who they are, or to give Armstrong thanks for something, whether it’s their education, experiences, student life, etc.,” Aradillas said.

Students are the most important part of Armstrong and help create a unique atmosphere specific to Armstrong.  The celebration wants to highlight the student’s contributions.

All of the birthday wishes will be hung outside of the Student Union during the celebration.

The celebration will take place between 3 and 5 p.m.  Students, faculty and staff are encouraged to come out, have fun, eat cake,  celebrate Armstrong and the end of the year.
