The first conference win of the season came tonight for the Georgia Southern University volleyball team in its first conference game of the season against Elon University.

The Eagles won the match in four games.

The first game was a match of tug of war, led by junior Jamie DeRatt and senior Nicole Jeschelnik. After trading points for a majority of the contest GSU scored four unanswered points, ending the match 25-20.

Game two was more of the same. The Eagles struggled to put down Elon who kept finding ways to stay in the game. After finding a rhythm, GSU won the bout 25-17.

As the Eagles moved into the decisive game three, they led late 21-17. Elon then battled back keeping comeback hope alive, finishing the set 27-25.

GSU crushed any hopes of a comeback with sophomore libero Alex Beecher anchoring the defense and helping finish off the team’s conference opponent 25-21.

Jeschelnik summed up her team’s performance with pride. “We came out and played our game, and if you let us do that we are going to beat you,” Jeschelnik said.

The Eagles face off in their second conference game tomorrow at 2 p.m. in the Hanner Complex against the University of North Carolina at Greensboro.
