Georgia Southern men’s soccer took UAB into double overtime, but still ended the night with a 1-1 tied Tuesday night.

The Eagles (5-5-2) were first to strike as Javier Carbonell scored his 13th goal of the season in the 20th minute of play as he found the back of the net off a shot from the top of the box.

GS was able to hold the Dragons with a 1-0 lead all throughout the first half, but UAB was able to find the equalizer in the 65th minute.

“The goal was tough to concede,” Head Coach John Murphy said to gseagles. “I thought we started brightly in the first half.

From there both teams fought, but UAB was able to hold GS to just one shot in the second half as sophomore Gonzalo Talavera took a shot off an Eagle corner kick that went just wide of the goal.

The Eagles were able to squeeze in four more shots during over time, but it wasn’t enough as GS left Alabama with a tie.

Overall UAB had the edge in shots over the Eagles 15-11, while GS had the edge in corner kicks 8-6.

“We’re disappointed to come away with a tie, but that shows the growth within the team as some teams would be happy coming to UAB on a Tuesday night and earning a draw,” Murphy said. “We’re at the stage where want just a little bit more.”

The Eagles will be back in action as they take on rival Georgia State at home Saturday at 7 p.m.
